fragments

here are fragments of you or me
a life to pick up and see
needing time to fit together
to sail through squally weather
parts of an infinite jigsaw
with an elusive piece, a flaw

here are fragments of the earth
the countries of our birth
where oceans divide the free
while others ne’er the sea
filled shadows with rotation
in darkest contemplation

here are fragments of all time
including journeys left to climb
a map from first to last
foundations that were cast
and changes to observe
along the cosmic curve

here are fragments of the story
the sadness and the glory
to join with truth as seen
explaining the machine
and satisfy the mind
without being so unkind
